How I Installed an Epoxy Floor in My Garage (DIY Guide)

If you’re thinking of upgrading your garage with a clean, sleek, and professional-looking epoxy floor, you’re in the right place. I recently completed this project myself, and I’m sharing every step—from material selection to final curing—so you can do it too.

What You’ll Need

Here’s everything I used for the job, including an affiliate link to the epoxy kit I chose:

  • ✅ Epoxy Floor Coating Kit – Buy on Amazon
  • ✅ Spike Shoes for Epoxy Flooring – Buy on Amazon
  • ✅ Painter’s tape and plastic covers for masking
  • ✅ Protective gloves and mask
  • ✅ Floor grinder or sandpaper (optional, for surface correction)

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Clean the Surface Thoroughly

    • Remove all dust, oil, grease, and dirt.
    • If your floor has any irregularities or stains, use a concrete degreaser or light sanding.
  2. Etch the Surface with Acid

    • I used muriatic acid to open up the concrete and ensure the epoxy adheres correctly.
    • This step is crucial. Rinse thoroughly and let the floor dry completely.
  3. Wait for the Right Conditions

    • Temperature and humidity matter. I waited for a dry day with moderate temperatures (~65-75°F / 18-24°C).
    • Do not apply if the floor is cold or damp. It affects curing and adhesion.
  4. Mask and Protect the Area

    • Use painter’s tape to block off any walls, drains, or areas you don't want epoxy on.
    • Be precise here—epoxy is hard to remove once cured.
  5. Mix and Apply the Epoxy

    • Follow the mixing instructions exactly.
    • I used a roller and a floor squeegee to spread it evenly.
    • Work in sections and keep a wet edge to avoid visible seams.
  6. Cure Time

    • Wait a few hours before walking on it.
    • Wait 48 hours before placing heavy objects.
    • I waited 4 days before parking the car.

💡 Tip: Curing time depends heavily on the weather. Cold = slow cure. Plan ahead.

Tricks & Considerations

  • If it’s too cold, the epoxy may never cure properly.
  • Don’t skip the acid wash—it’s the key to long-lasting results.
  • Keep your workspace clean and covered.
  • Check your local temperature and humidity forecast before starting.
